  10. What is Media Changer?
  11.  
  12. Media Changer is a Win32 application that copies bitmaps,
  13. screen savers, and sounds from a specified directory or folder
  14. to your Windows or Windows\System directory. By selecting
  15. the files copied as your default wallpaper, screen saver, and
  16. system sounds, you can effortlessly have them changed each
  17. time you start your system.

  21. How to set it up:
  22.  
  23. Just copy MCHANGER.EXE to whatever directory you'd like to
  24. keep it in. Place an icon or a shortcut (NT or 95) in your
  25. startup Program Group or folder.
  26.  
  27. The first time you run MCHANGER.EXE, the program will produce
  28. an error message, and it will create a default MCHANGER.CFG
  29. file. This is your configuration file. This file must be kept
  30. in the same directory as MCHANGER.EXE.
  31.  
  32. Edit MCHANGER.CFG with any standard text editor (NOTEPAD.EXE
  33. will do fine). Here's what each line of the configuration
  34. file does:
  35.  
  36. bmp=c:\media\bmp\        Path to wallpaper
  37. scr=c:\media\scr\        Path to screen savers
  38. *ast=c:\media\wav\awav\        Path to Asterisk sound
  39. *stp=c:\media\wav\swav\        Path to Critical Stop sound
  40. *def=c:\media\wav\dwav\        Path to Default sound
  41. *exc=c:\media\wav\ewav\        Path to Exclamation sound
  42. *ext=c:\media\wav\xwav\        Path to Exit Windows sound
  43. *qst=c:\media\wav\qwav\        Path to Question sound
  44. *srt=c:\media\wav\twav\        Path to Start Windows sound

  46. Change the text after the = sign (after bmp=, for instance)
  47. for each line, putting your own source directory for each
  48. of the type of media. Be sure to place back slashes after
  49. each directory name (bmp=c:\windows\, for instance).
  50.  
  51. If you would like a particular type of media to be copied
  52. in random order (versus copying them in the order they are
  53. stored in the FAT), place an asterisk (*) before the
  54. corresponding line (*bmp=c:\windows\, for instance).
  55.  
  56. If you would like to indicate an initial file to start
  57. the copying process, place that on the end of the line
  58. (*bmp=c:\windows\chord.wav, for example).
  59.  
  60. If the filename is invalid, the provided path is invalid, 
  61. or there are no media files corresponding to the line 
  62. in the configuration file, Media Changer will issue an 
  63. error message.

  67. How to Use It:
  68.  
  69. Once your configuration file is set up, just run MCHANGER.EXE
  70. and files will be copied to the corresponding places. Here's
  71. where they are copied:
  72.  
  73. Wallpaper and sounds     Your Windows directory
  74. Screen savers        Your Windows\System directory
  75.  
  76. To choose the media files, open the Control Panel and choose 
  77. the following files from the above directories:

  105. * Windows NT does not show the actual filename of the screen
  106. saver in the Desktop Control Panel item. In order to know which 
  107. screen saver to choose, do one of the following:
  108.  
  109. 1) If you are using an alternate directory or folder as
  110. your screen saver source, move or delete all of the screen 
  111. savers out of the Windows\System directory except for scr.scr. 
  112. Now, when you go to select a screen saver, there will only 
  113. be one in the list. Choose it, then move your other .scr files
  114. back.
  115.  
  116. OR
  117.  
  118. 2) If you use your Windows\System directory as the source,
  119. open the Desktop Control Panel item, and then click on 
  120. the Screen Saver combo box. Look for a screen saver name 
  121. that is duplicated. Choose the first occurence of the 
  122. duplicate-named screen saver.
  123.  
  124. NOTE: Normally Media Changer will NOT copy the file listed
  125. in the configuration file. The file listed there is the current
  126. file (if the file was chosen by Media Changer) or the initial
  127. file (all subsequentially chosen files are based on this one) if
  128. you chose it. To copy the initial file to your Windows and/or
  129. Windows\System directories, run Media Changer once with 
  130. the following command line parameter:

  132. MCHANGER.EXE -C
  133.  
  134. The -c option will force Media Changer to copy the initial
  135. file if one is indicated. This means even if the media is
  136. marked as random, only the file indicated will be copied. If
  137. no initial file is indicated, the first file of the correct type in
  138. the indicated directory will be chosen.
